Redmi Note 6 Pro vs Redmi Note 5 Pro: Here’s what Xiaomi has changed in the new Note

The Redmi Note 6 Pro is a polished version of the Redmi Note 5 Pro

HIGHLIGHTS

  • One of the biggest upgrades to the Redmi Note 6 Pro is the cameras
  • The display is also bigger thanks to the notch
  • Both the phones are powered by the Snapdragon 636 chipset
Tomorrow, that is November 22, Xiaomi will launch the Redmi Note 6 Pro. Interested buyers will be able to grab the Note 6 Pro a day after the launch, that is on November 23, via Flipkart and Mi.com where Xiaomi will hold the flash sale for the device. As far as the price is concerned, there is no official word out yet. But taking into account how Xiaomi prices its phones, here at the India Today Tech we believe the phone would be priced around Rs 16,000, possibly Rs at 15,999. The Note 5 Pro currently sells for Rs 13,999 (after the recent price drop) in India.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro was launched at the beginning of this year, and even after months of its launch, it is still one of the best selling Xiaomi phones in India. Only time will tell if Xiaomi will be able to repeat the same success with the Redmi 6 Pro or not, but the way I see it -- and I say it after using the Note 6 Pro for the last few days -- I expect the new Note from Xiaomi to be quite popular. The reason is simple: The Redmi Note 6 Pro is a polished version of the Redmi Note 5 Pro. Let's take a quick look at how the Note 6 Pro is different from the Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Camera: The major upgrade that Xiaomi brings to the Redmi Note 6 Pro over the Note 5 Pro is in the camera. The Redmi Note 5 Pro sports two cameras on the back and single sensor on the front. But in the case of the Redmi Note 6 Pro, Xiaomi brings dual-camera system on both front and back. The Redmi Note 6 Pro comes with a main 12-megapixel sensor on the back with Dual Pixel autofocus and f/1.9 aperture, and a secondary sensor of 5-megapixel for depth sensing. The Redmi Note 5 Pro also comes with the same camera configuration (12-megapixel + 5-megapixel) similar to the Note 6 Pro but with aperture of f/2.2 for the main camera. The lens with bigger aperture in the Note 6 Pro means it should be better at clicking low-light images.
On the front too, the Redmi Note 6 Pro sports a dual camera setup. It includes a primary sensor of 20-megapixel and a secondary camera with 2-megapixel sensor for portrait shots. The Redmi Note 5 Pro in comparison comes with single 20-megapixel front camera.
Display: The screen of the Redmi Note 6 Pro is bigger than the one in the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The Note 6 Pro sports a 6.26-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD display with an aspect ratio of 19:9, while the Note 5 Pro comes with a 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels and 403ppi pixel density.
Hardware: There's not much of an upgrade in this area. Both the Redmi Note 6 Pro and the Redmi Note 5 Pro are powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, clubbed with Adreno 509 GPU. The Redmi Note 5 Pro is available in two configurations in India - the base model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, while the top-end version includes 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. In other markets, the Redmi Note 6 Pro is available in only one variant, but in India, the smartphone will be available in two variants. The base version of the phone comes with 4GB RAM/64GB storage, while the top-end model packs 6GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which is expandable by a microSD card of up to 256GB.

Software: Besides the camera and the display, this is another area where Xiaomi has upgraded the Redmi Note 6 Pro. The Redmi Note 5 Pro was launched running on Android 7.1.1 Nougat-based MIUI 9. However, as Xiaomi promised, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has now been upgraded to Android 8.1 Oreo-based on the latest MIUI 10. The Redmi Note 6 Pro also runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 10. This is also the first Redmi Note series phone to come with MIUI 10 out-of-the-box.
Battery: Both the Redmi Note 6 Pro and Note 5 Pro are powered by a massive 4,000mAh battery. But the Note 6 Pro comes with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 support, while the Note 5 Pro supports Quick Charge 2.0.
Colours: The Redmi Note 5 Pro is available in four colours: lake blue, black, champagne gold and rose gold. The Redmi Note 6 Pro will also be available in four colours but they won't be the same. The upcoming Redmi Note phone will be available in red, blue, black, and rose gold colours.
